"Help, I've been Raped."

  1. Go to a Safe Place.
Call 911 for police transport if you do not feel safe/able to transport yourself.

  2. Call Someone!
A Victim Services Center counselor/advocate will meet you at the hospital or police station at your request.  Counselor/advocates are there for support, to protect your rights as a victim, and to explain the steps of the interview process and forensic examination.

  3. Preserve the Evidence.
If you have been sexually assaulted or raped, consider saving any physical evidence of the attack.  You may not want to talk with police right now, but you might in the days to come. Preserving evidence does not mean you have to prosecute!  Even if evidence is collected, it is always your decision about what action you do or don't want to take.  Through every step of the process of evidence collection, investigation, all the way to a course case, it is your decision!

Tips on Preserving Evidence

  • Save your clothing.  Bring all clothing and personal items to the hospital/police department in a PAPER bag.  DO NOT bathe, shower, douche.

  • DO NOT go to the bathroom, brush your teeth/chew gym, eat or drink, smoke.  DO NOT brush your hair, wash your hands, clean/sanitize cuts or injuries obtained during the assault.

  • Seek medical assistance/forensic examination within 72 hours of the assault.
